This program offers, established in 1978 a fully accredited, three-year training program with 13 residents accepted into each class. Residents are selected through ERAS and, historically, come from a wide range of locations across the United States. Residents are supervised by 25 ABEM board-certified attending physicians who average 15 years of clinical experience after residency and expertise in a wide range of areas relative to the practice of emergency medicine including ultrasound, EMS, toxicology, wilderness medicine, simulation medicine, pediatrics, information technology, HBO, hospital administration and global health.
The curriculum for first-year residents includes multiple clinical courses such as ACLS, ATLS, PALS, FCCS, EMS base station instruction, and emergency ultrasound. Rotations during the first year include cardiology, critical care, EMS, obstetrics, and ultrasound, and nine rotations in the emergency department. During the second program year, residents rotate in the emergency department for eight blocks and have off-service rotations in the PICU, STICU, and MICU. PGY 2 residents also one elective rotation. Residents in their third program year have eleven EM rotations and two elective rotations. Popular elective rotations include global health, HBO, and wilderness medicine. In the last few years, many residents have participated in global health rotations in a number of countries including Uganda, Nicaragua, Samoa, Tanzania, Ghana, India, Guatemala, and Honduras. These experiences are strongly encouraged and supported by the program.
Approximately twenty percent of our graduates enter fellowships in a variety of training programs including emergency ultrasound, EMS, toxicology, simulation medicine, global health, and pediatric emergency medicine. Our emergency department also supports four fellowships: Emergency Ultrasound, EMS, Global Health, and Simulation Medicine.
